Ultrasonic Scaling & Root Planing

Regular dental cleaning, or prophylaxis, involves thoroughly cleaning plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth, or crowns. Sometimes, however, the bacteria-rich biofilm works its way underneath your gums and accumulates on your roots. Scaling and root planing, or deep cleaning, is the process of carefully accessing your roots underneath your gums to clean away oral bacteria (scaling) and smooth the root surfaces (root planing). Using advanced technology, Dr. Campbell can perform ultrasonic scaling more comfortably and effectively than with traditional scaling tools. Ultrasonic scaling uses soundwave technology to break up plaque and tartar deposits, making their removal easier.

When to Schedule an Appointment

The buildup of plaque and tartar on your teeth can gradually lead to tooth decay and cavities if not removed in a timely fashion. However, when oral bacteria accumulate under your gums, the infection can lead to inflammatory gum disease, which is the leading cause of adult tooth loss in the United States. If Dr. Campbell notices signs of gingivitis during your checkup, such as redness, inflammation, and/or bleeding of the gums, then ultrasonic scaling and root planing may be necessary to stop gum disease from developing or growing worse.

If gum disease is already present, then ultrasonic scaling and root planing may be the first of a prescribed periodontal maintenance routine. In severe cases, Dr. Campbell may recommend you visit a trusted periodontal specialist for more comprehensive treatment.
